One of the items you may have purchased when you bought your guinea pig is a brush. But how do you introduce it to your pet and get him used to brushing his hair? What is the best type of brush to use?
You will want to use a brush with bristles that are not too sharp or rough; but will still get the job done right. You can also use a comb. You can buy a brush or comb designed for guinea pigs at your pet store. You could also use a soft baby brush.
Brushing your guinea pig’s coat will help reduce shedding, so you should do this at least once a week for short-haired guinea pigs and more often for longer haired guinea pigs. Longer haired guinea pigs need to be brushed more often to prevent hair from matting.
Start by taking your guinea pig out of his cage and placing him on a towel on your lap, so he thinks he is having some play/cuddle time. You want to make this an experience your pet will enjoy and be comfortable with. Use gentle brushing motions and brush in the same direction that your pet’s hair grows. This is also a perfect opportunity to see if there is any matting in the hair or if there are scabs/dry spots or anything suspicious on your guinea pig’s skin.
Be sure to pet your guinea pig after you are finished and give him a treat!
